Carmakers learned years ago it’s not easy to make a practical hydrogen fuel cell. Yet hydrogen fuel cells do work, and they’re greener than batteries. So how about using a mini hydrogen fuel cell to recharge something small—like your mobile phone battery?

That’s the idea behind SiGNa Chemistry’s PowerTrekk, demo’d at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The device is filled with a powdery substance known as sodium silicide that produces hydrogen gas in the presence of water. It has the same recharge power as six AA batteries, minus the heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

PowerTrekk and PowerBag: That’s two separate companies — but with a common goal: Keeping your vastly expanding bandolier of gadgets up and running wherever you go, however long you’re going. Swedish company PowerTrekk’s novel fuel cell recharger (powered by technology from New York’s SIGNa Chemistry) gives you all-day charge with just a hockey-puck shaped disc and a few fluid ounces of water. PowerBag is less exotic but — in some ways — more immediately useful: It’s a bag, with power. Attachments (full-size, mini and micro USB, as well as iDevice) allow you to connect up to four devices to a heavy-duty battery that neatly sockets into the bag. To recharge the battery (and any attached devices), just plug the whole bag into the wall. A lifesaver.

Batteries and chargers are the bane of a high-tech lifestyle. For each new device there is usually a new size battery, a new charger, and a new set of concerns about battery life. And then comes the quest for an AC power outlet to fire them all up. For years the industry has been searching for some type of “holy grail” that would allow road warriors to travel freely without being slaves to power sockets and backup batteries. Solar was the first candidate, but portable solar cells have limited power output, and of course only work when the sun is shining.

A Swedish company headquartered in Stockholm has figured out how to power smartphones using a system that includes some water, a tray, a little round container, and an eyeglass case styled cover. The company, myFC, is introducing its PowerTrekk system to Americans at the CES show in Vegas. PowerTrekk describes its charger as a pocket size, lightweight gizmo for users “who spend time away from the electricity grid.” Translation: If you are hiking over the weekend with no Starbucks or friend’s flat in sight, your phone can still get charged.
